Surfacing
Neil Goldberg’s Surfacing stitched together images of passengers emerging from the New York City subway into the tumult of the street. For the June 2013 Midnight Moment, the artist was inspired by the vulnerability seen in the faces of these commuters, the look of perplexity and disorientation linking an otherwise wildly diverse selection of people. Yet this piece spoke just as much to recuperation as it does to bewilderment, as one person after another found her or his bearings and walked out of the frame.
“Surfacing captures a very quiet, inward experience. I'm excited to see that fleeting moment rendered monumental on the towering screens above Times Square. And I love that what's happening in the video will mirror what's taking place on the street below — people searching, orienting themselves, continuing on.” --Neil Goldberg
