Hate Has No Place Here
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander communities have faced increasing and intensifying levels of racism and xenophobia. That racism and xenophobia led to an additional wave of attacks and harassment in spring 2021, including incidents in and around Times Square.
In response to those attacks, artist Zipeng Zhu, who has previously had works appear in Times Square through the Messages for the City project, has created a series of works calling for an end to hatred and discrimination against Asian and Asian-American people. The still images and videos include the messages "Hate Has No Place Here: Stop Asian Hate" and "Fight the Virus Not the People: Stop Asian Hate." Zhu's works appear on screens and BigBelly recycling containers throughout Times Square.
