(New York, N.Y.) May 26, 2015 — Fresh off May’s run of gritty Warhol portraits, artist Richard Garet’s Perceptual: Sonic Landscape/Midnight Blink will be shown on Times Square’s electronic billboards from 11:57 pm to midnight each night in June. The piece, an abstract visualization of sounds captured in Times Square across a multi-day period, is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts.
Perceptual: Sonic Landscape/Midnight Blink transforms the frenzied sounds of Times Square into a lush, luminescent visual representation. Garet has left no audio in the piece, only a moving image signal that takes the viewer on an optical journey through the neighborhood’s soundscape. For more information, visit www.TimesSquareNYC.org/Perceptual.
On June 5, Garet will lead a ‘Sound Walk’ through Times Square to the key locations from his recording sessions, sharing his most striking sonic experiences with participants. The walk will culminate with a viewing of the Midnight Moment at 11:57 pm on Times Square’s Broadway Plazas.
Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, said, “This is the first time that an artist has gathered sound for the creation of a Midnight Moment. Richard’s work is another great example of how artists help us to hear and see our everyday in new and engaging ways.”
Sherry Dobbin, Times Square Arts Director, said, “We love the counterpoint of our silent film growing from sound.”
Fred Rosenberg, President of the Times Square Advertising Coalition, said, “We’re thrilled that the talented artists recruited for the Midnight Moment continue to add new components to the nightly show. The slowly fluctuating color of Richard Garet’s video shows-off the state-of-the-art technology of Times Square’s digital screens.”
Artist Richard Garet, said, “In my processes establishing the material is key, and from there it becomes a reductive process where a vast number of possibilities and outcomes are explored until the work reaches proper momentum, purpose, and significance. Moreover, objectifying the ordinary and reinventing the character of found mundane things in life is very interesting to me.”

About Midnight Moment
Midnight Moment is the largest coordinated effort in history by the sign operators in Times Square to display synchronized, cutting-edge creative content on electronic billboards and newspaper kiosks throughout Times Square every night.
